The STAFF and CLEFS
The Staff
The staff is a collection of 5 parallel lines.
In order to know which note corresponds to what line or space, we use a symbol called a clef, this symbol is placed at the beginning of a staff.
2 types of clefs used in contemporary music.
- The Treble(G) Clef
- The Bass(F) clef
The treble clef is used to represent the notes in the upper proportion of the keyboard, approximately from middle C upwards.
The Bass clef is used commonly to notate music for piano and bass, it is used to represent the notes in the lower portion of the piano keyboard, from middle C downwards.
The Grand Staff
When the treble clef and bass clef is joined together, it creates what we know as the GRAND STAFF.
This is created by:
-Connecting the 2 staffs together by a line
-Connecting the 2 staffs together by a bracket, to signify the 2 staffs are grouped together
Middle C is both the first ledger line below the treble clef and the 1st ledger line above the bass clef.
